This pattern is a part of the Garden of Dreams CAL project.

You need 7 different colors of yarn for this flower square.You can crochet this square using almost any kind of yarn, but I recommend yarns with a hook recommendation of max 4.5 mm.

Make a magic ring and crochet rnd 1 sts into it.


Rnd 1

White 

Ch 3 (counts as dc), 11 dc into ring. Join to the 3rd ch with slst. 

[12 dc]


Rnd 2

White 

(Ch 4, sk 1stch from hook, sl st into next 3 chs working back to 1st ch (=1 spoke) slst into next dc), 12 times. Join to the same st (rnd 1) as 1st ch with slst. Cut yarn and fasten off.

Rnd 3

Mustard 

SSBPsc into any dc of 1st rnd. *Ch 8,work next sts into the 8 ch-sts, (sk 1stch, 2 sc -make a 1stsc a bit loose-, hdc into each of the next 5 ch), BPsc into next 2 dc of rnd 1* 6 times, omit last BPsc in the last repeat. Join to the 1stBPsc with slst. Cut yarn and fasten off. 

[(spoke, 2 sc and 5 hdc in each) 6 times, 12 BPsc]

Rnd 4

Yellow 

Please note, that sts are worked into the spaces between the sts of rnd 3. This rnd is worked around each spoke to make the petals.  

SSsc into any 2nd BPsc between spoke.

(2 hdc in the sp between next 2 hdc from rnd 3, 2 dc in the next sp, (tr in the next sp) 2 times, dc in the next sp, 2 hdc in next space, 5 hdc into the ch1-sp –the marked ch sp-,2 hdc in the next sp, dc in the next sp, (tr in the next sp) 2 times, 2 dc in the next sp, 2 hdc in the next sp, sk BPsc, sc in the next st) 6 times, omit last sc in last repeat. Join to the 1stsc with slst.

Rnd 5

Yellow 

Ch 1 (counts as sc), 10 sc, (2 sc into next st, (hdc, ch 1, hdc) into next st – should be the middle hdc at the tip-, 2 sc into next st, 21 sc) 5 times, 2 sc into next st, (hdc, ch 1, hdc) into next st, 2 sc into next st, 10 sc. Join to the 1st sc with slst. Cut yarn and fasten off. 

[(25 sc, (hdc, ch1-sp, hdc)/tip) 6 times] 

Place stitch marker into tip of any petal. This is now your 1st petal.

Rnd 6

Black 

Working into skipped BPsc of rnd 3.

 SSsc into skipped BPsc (rnd 3) to the right behind your 1st petal (fold petals toward the center of the work, now you can see sc sts better), (Ch 3, sc into skipped st) 6 times, omit last sc in last repeat. Join to the 1stsc with slst.

Rnd 7

Black 

Slst into next ch3-sp.

Ch 3 (counts as dc), 5 dc into same ch3-sp,

(sk sc, 6 dc into next ch3-sp) 5 times, sk sc. Join to top of the 3rd ch with slst.

Rnd 8

Black 

Ch 2 (counts as hdc), hdc in the next 2 sts, *counting from bottom of spoke, work BPsc around the spoke from rnd 4 above the 6th st of the petal (see top photo), hdc in the next 6 sts, BPsc around the spoke from rnd 4 above the 3rdst of the petal (see bottom photo), hdc in the next 6 sts* 3 times, omit last 3 hdc in last repeat. Join to the top of 2nd ch with slst.

Rnd 9

Black 

Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in the next 2 sts, (2 dc into next st (this st is BPsc of previous rnd), dc in the next 6 sts) 6 times. Omit last 3 dc in the last repeat. Join to the top of 3rdch with slst.

Rnd 10

Black 

In this rnd petals 2, 4 and 6 will be joined with SAdc

Remember that the 1stpetal is marked with st marker. 

Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in the next 7 sts,

*SAdc behind the petal around the 7thst of rnd 5 (counted from tip down, this sc was worked into a dc on the right side of petal, see photo)

dc into the next 2 sts, (2 dc into next st) 2 times, dc into next 2 sts, SAdc into petal in 7th st of rnd 5 (counted from tip down, this sc was worked into a dc of the left side of the petal, see photo), dc into next 8 sts * 4 times, omit last 8 dc in last repeat. Join to the top of 3rdch with slst.

Rnd 11

Black 

Ch 6 (counts as dc + 3 ch), sk st, (4 dc, ch 3, sk st, 12 dc, ch 3, sk st) 2 times. 4 dc, ch 3, sk st, 11 dc. Join to the top of 3rdch with slst. Cut yarn and fasten off.

Rnd 12

Light Gray 

Work in front of ch3-sps of previous rnd. Starting point is the skipped st below the ch3-sp and before the group of 4 dcs. 

SSdc into skipped st of rnd 10 before the group of 4dcs, 5 dc into the same st. (Ch 3, sk 4 dc, 6 dc into next skipped st, ch 5, sk 6 sts, sc in the space between 6thand 7thsts, ch 5, sk 6 st, 6 dc into next skipped st) 2 times. Ch 3, sk 4 dc, 6 dc into skipped st, ch 5, sk 6 sts, sc in the space between 6thand 7thsts, ch 5, sk 6 st. Join to the 1stdc with slst. Cut yarn and fasten off.  

[6 x 6dc-group, 3 x ch3-sp, 6 x ch5-sp, 3 sc] 

Rnd 13

Mustard 

SSsc into right side of the ch5-sp before the 6dc group of previous rnd. *Ch 4, (puff-mini into next dc, ch 1) 5 times, puff-mini in the last dc, ch2, sk ch3-sp, (puff-mini into dc, ch 1) 5 times, puff-mini in the last dc, ch 4, sc into ch5-sp, ch 2, sk sc, sc into ch5-sp* 3 times, omit sc in last repeat. Join to the 1stsc with slst. Cut yarn and fasten off. 

[36 puff-mini, 30 ch1-sp done between puff-mini, 6 x

ch4-sp, 6 x ch2-sp, 6 sc]

Rnd 14

Dark Gray 

Work in rnds 13, 11 and 5. Be sure to work sts into the correct rnd. Some of the ch-sps lay behind your work and the rest of the sts will be done into the dcs. When crocheting dcs over ch-sps, make sure that your yarn tension is loose enough to hide the ch-sps of previous rnds..  

If for some reason (yarn color or thickness) dcs do not cover ch-sps, you can leave them behind your work. 

Remove st marker.   

SSBPsc into 1stpuff-mini of a 12 puff-mini-group.

*(Ch 2, sk ch-sp, BPsc into puff-mini) 5 times. dc4tog into the 4 dc of rnd 11, the 1stleg into the 1st0f 4 sts, the 2ndleg into 2nddc and ch1-sp at tip of petal, 3rdleg into 3rddc and ch1-sp at tip of petal, 4thleg into 4thdc. Note that ch-sps lays behind your work.

(BPsc into puff-mini, ch 2, sk ch-sp) 5 times. BPsc into last puff-mini. dc into next 6 dcs of rnd 11 (dcs should be worked around the ch-sps of rnds 12 and 13), sc into/around the sc and ch1-sp at tip of petal, dc into next 6 dc of rnd 11(dcs should be worked around the ch-sps of rnds 12 and 13).BPsc into puff-mini. * 3 times. Omit last BPsc in last repeat. Join to the 1stBPsc with slst. Place st marker into working loop of yarn, do not cut yarn, place yarn in front of your work.

Rnd 15

White 

Work the 3 scs into/around the ch-sps from rnd 13 and 14 

There are 3 x 12puff-mini groups in your work. 

SSsc into 1st ch-sp of a 12 puff-mini group, 2 sc into same ch-sp.

*(Sk BPsc, 3 sc into ch-sp) 4 times, ch 2, sk (BPsc, dc4tog, BPsc), (3 sc into ch-sp, sk BPsc) 5 times. Ch 6, sk 6 dc, BPsc into sc, ch 6, sk (6dc, BPsc), 3 sc into ch-sp.* 3 times, omit 3 sc into ch-sp in the last repeat. Join to the 1stsc with slst. Cut yarn and fasten off. 

[90 sc, 3 BPsc, 6 x ch6-sp, 3 ch2-sp]

Rnd 16

Dark Gray 

Remove st marker. Ch 5 (counts as dc + 2ch), sk 3 sc.

*Sc between the groups of 3sc, (ch 2, sk 3sc, sc between the groups of 3sc) 3 times. Sk the next group of 3sc, 6 dc into next ch-sp, sk the next group of 3sc, sc between the next group of 3sc.

(Ch 2, sk 3 sc, sc between the group of 3sc) 3 times, sk the next group of 3sc, ch 2, dc into next 6 dc of rnd 14, into/around thech-sps of previous rnd, 2 dc in the next st of rnd 14, dc in the next 6 dcs of rnd 14, into/around thech-sps of previous rnd, ch 2, sk 3 sc.* 3 times, omit (dc, ch 2, sk 3 sc) in the last repeat. Join to the top of 3rdch with slst.

Rnd 17

Dark Gray 

Ch 1 (counts as sc),

*(2 sc into ch-sp, sk sc) 4 times, 6 sc, (sk sc, 2 sc into ch-sp) 4 times. 14 sc.* 3 times, omit sc in last repeat. Join to the 1st ch with slst.

Rnd 18

Dark Gray 

Ch 1 (count as sc),sc in the next 8 sts, (hdc in the next st, dc in the next st, ch 1, dc in the next st, hdc in the next st, sc in the next 23 sts) 4 times, omit 9 sc in last repeat. Join to the 1stsc with slst. Cut yarn and fasten off. 

[(2 dc, 2 hdc, 23 sc)/side, ch1-sp/corner) 4]

Rnd 19

Light Gray 

SSsc into 4thst before any corner ch1-sp.

*Sk (sc, hdc, dc), (tr, ch 1 into ch1-sp) 5 times, tr into same ch-sp. Sk (dc, hdc, sc), 21 sc.* 4 times, omit last sc in the last repeat. Join to the 1stsc with slst. Cut yarn and fasten off. 

[(21 sc/side, 6 tr, 5 ch1-sp between tr/corner) 4 times]

Rnd 20

Yellow 

SSFPsc into 1sttr of any corner.

*(3 dc into ch1-sp, FPsc into tr) 5 times. SK sc, sc in the next 20 sts, FPsc into next tr.* 4 times, omit last FPsc in the last repeat. Join to the 1stFPsc with slst. Cut yarn and fasten off. 

[(20sc/side, 6 FPsc and 15 dc/corner) 4 times]

Rnd 21

Gray 

If the FPtr that are done in the scs of rnd 17do not lay flat, you can replace them with a FPdtr. 

SSBPdc into 1stdc after corners 1st FPsc, BPdc in next 2 sts,

*Sk FPsc, BPdc in the next 3 sts, skFPsc, BPdc in the next st, (BPdc, ch 2, BPdc) into next st, BPdc in the next st, skFPsc, (BPdc in the next 3 sts, skFPsc) 2 times. dc in the next 3 sts, (FPtr around next 2 sc of rnd 17, sk 2 sc of rnd 20, dc in the next 2 sts) 3 times, 2 FPtr into next skipped st of rnd 17, dc in the next 3 sts, skFPsc, BPdc in the next 3 sts.* Repeat * 4 times, omit last 3 BPdc in the last repeat. Join to the 1stBPdc with slst. Cut yarn and fasten off. 

[(12 dc, 8 FPtr, 16 BPdc) /side, (ch2-sp/corner) 4 times]

Rnd 22

Mustard 

*SSdc (counts as dc here and in the next repeats) into a corner ch2-sp, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) into same ch2-sp. (In next repeats there are 2 dc + ch 2 + 2 dc in corners ch2-sp), Ch 1, sk 2 st, sc, (ch 1, sk st, sc) 16 times, ch1.* 4 times. Join to the 1stdc with slst. Cut yarn and fasten off. 

[(17 sc, 18 x ch1-sp, (2 dc, ch2-sp, 2 dc)/corner) 4 times]

Rnd 23

Black 

(SSDc, dc, ch 2, 2 dc) into any corners ch2-sp.

*2 dc, (2 dc into ch1-sp, sk sc) 17 times, 2 dc into last ch1-sp, 2 dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) into ch2-sp.* 4 times, omit (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the last repeat. Join to the 1stdc with slst. Cut yarn or continue with The Garden paths section. 

Note that the flower is more three dimensional and you need to place the petals correctly before blocking the square. Set petals 1, 3 and 5 up. Petals 2, 4 and 6 push against the work.  

Fasten off and secure ends, wet block the square, and let dry.
